Favortie Halloween Movies

Since the weather is cooler and the month of monsters and witches is here, I feel like watching my favorite scary movies over and over again. So I figured I would share some of my favorite movies that I dig out every October. Now a few of them aren't really scary but they all scream Halloween to me. So with no further ado, here are my top ten (oops sorry 11) must sees, not in any particular order.

Dracula, The 1931 Bela Lugosi classic.

The Lost Boys

Rosemary's Baby

The Legend of Sleepy Hallow, Disney version narrated by Bing Crosby

Hocus Pocus

Fright Night

Halloween, The original not the stupid Rob Zombie remake.

Candyman

The Haunting, 1963 classic not the really bad Catherine Zeta Jones remake.

House on Haunted Hill, 1958 Vincent Price classic

The Monster Squad

So what movies do you have to watch during the month of October? What movies provide the tricks and the treat?

  5. Those are all great movies. Well, since most of my halloween movies are centered around watching them with my son they are a little more layed back. We like Halloweentown (all three of them). There is one with a little vampire boy that befriends a family and in the end do become real people again. We love Hocus Pocus as well. We end up walking around all night and the next day singing the song I put a spell on you. lol. We enjoy that. We also like When Good Ghouls go Bad.

I do have to say I did love Lost Boys growing up.

  7. Christine, Was The Descent the movie where the group of grils go into the cave? If so I liked it but I sort of like The Cave better?

Melissa, The Halloween Town movies are pretty good.

Lezlie, I have to admit that at one point in my life I loved that movie.

  8. Ooh, these sound tempting! BTW, a few months ago, I watched "Rosemary's Baby" again on one of my cable channels, so I ordered the DVD from Amazon. Guess I'll bring that one out!

And with Roman Polanski in the news again...Hmm! He is definitely a talented director.

  9. Laurel, I bought it a few years ago for five bucks, at Wal Mart I think. I love this movie and can never get enough of it. I know about watching movies on cable and having to order them too. I watched Burnt Offerings with Bette Davis and now have to get it. This is a really good, creepy haunted house movie.

  10. The Great Pumpkin is about the only Halloween movie I'll watch. I'm not much for scary movies.

  11. Carol, If you don't like scary movies try Hocus Pocus or The Legend of Sleepy Hallow. The second one is available on a DVD called The Adventures of Mr. Toad and Ichabod.

  12. You are correct about The Descent. I haven't seen The Cave. I think about it at home but when I am ready to rent a movie, I never remember. Note to self - put on list!

  13. I will watch various horror movies out of my collection, but I also watch out for horror movies on TV. Saw a really terrible one the other day, Terror in the Crypt, with Christopher Lee, hosted by a 'family' of reallllyyyy baaaad actors headed up by Gravely and Grizelda Macabre - great fun! But it is essential that I watch Halloween and Halloween II right in a row on Halloween itself (together they make up one story).

BTW, Ryan, glad you enjoyed the movie Burnt Offerings - still hoping that you will find the book, which is even better!

  14. Ooh! I remember seeing Candyman in the theater in high school! SO creepy! That thing freaked me out for ages! I mean, seriously, that mirror thing in the apartment was just too freaky for words! And, I still refuse to say "Candyman" five times in front of a mirror! :)

  15. Christine, Put it on your list now :-)

Dulcinea, Thanks so much for stopping by. I'm still hunting for Burnt Offerings. I would rather buy it local instead of on line that way I can see what kind of shape it's in. I should have listed Halloween II since I watch it right after Halloween I as well. And Christopher Lee is a horror movie god!

Beth, I double dog dare you to say it this Halloween!

  17. I don't know if I can even name a fav horror movie...there are so many! I love the original House of Wax with Vincent Price and The Haunting (I bought it on VHS at a sale for a dollar!) Newer ones...The Descent, The Ring, The Grudge. I love the Scream trilogy too. Old school Halloween is great and I am in agreement about Rosemary's Baby...just a great creepy story!

  18. I love Young Frankenstein. I have to watch it every Halloween--it's actually the only Halloween-related activity I can stand.

  19. You have the best taste in film.

Candyman!!! Why haven't more people watched that? That film scares the crap out of me. I still get shivers when I'm looking in the bathroom mirror.

And Hocus Pocus FTW! Bette Midler is awesome. Fact. ;-)
