Now who would not want Mary Poppins as their nanny? She sings, turns pictures to life, and can take anything she wants out of her bad. She is perfect.
All I can remember from the first time I watched the movie as a kid was a sense of wonder and awe. She was everything I was lacking in my own childhood. She was caring but stern, fun but kept you on task, and always knew what to say to make everything all better.
I've never read the 8 books she stars in so my only reference is the movie. I've always meant to read the books but for some reason I always find myself doing something else. How can you not love this character though? How can you not want to jump through that chalk drawing and ride the carousel? Of course I may pass on the whole jumping through chimneys bit.

I loved Mary Poppins! It was one of my favorite movies growing up. Oh just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down....lol
I also loved Mary Poppins...I mean who wouldn't?! She made everything fun! I didn't know that there were books. I'm going to have to look in to that!
I loved this movie as a child and still enjoy it today. I did read some of the books as well, and though I enjoyed them I do have to point out that the Mary in the books is not the same as the Mary in the movie. She isn't as kind and funny in the books, and she is decidedly "odder" as well. Still, the books are worth reading on their own merit if you can keep from comparing them to the movie. :)
I didn't know there were books. Cool.
Ah, Mary. No, sadly I've not read any of the original Mary Poppins books. Maybe next year...
Hi, Ryan! I actually love this movie! Now I can't help singing Just a Spoonful of Sugar in my head over and over!
I think the two movies I watched the most growing up, and almost the only movies I watched until I was about six, were Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.
I didn't realize there were books until more recently so I haven't read them yet, but I plan to!
This might explain why I grew up to become a nanny...
Mary Poppins is such a fun character :) Love her!
I love the movie. My favorite part is when they visit that guy to have tea and sing "I love to laugh-HA HA HA HA!" and the table floats to the ceiling. I thought that was hi-larious when I was a kid.
Mary herself is pretty sketchy, though. She make anything disappear into her bag? Hrmmmmm. And exactly what was in that spoonful of "medicine" she gave the kid to go to sleep?!
I'm right there with you on the Mary Poppins love. She was awesome. Still IS awesome. I probably watch this movie at least once a year, even though I'm not a kid anymore... :)
Zia, I always find myself singing "Let's Go Fly a Kite"
Michelle, If you get to them before I do let me know what you think of them.
Heather, Thank you so much for the heads up on the books. I've heard that about them but one of these days I'm going to get to them.
Robsad, Let me know if you ever read them.
Bookshelf, I keep saying that as well.
Peter, Why is that everyone's favorite song? I never cared too much for it myself
KT, LOL...We all have our inspiration from somewhere.
Krista, Good. Otherwise I would have disowned you :-)
Heiden, If you ever find out let me know so I can take some of it.
Celia, You can never be too old for Mary.
Who doesn't love Mary Poppins?! exactly!
The Disney movie and music are fantastic, and probably what come to mind for most of us.
Dawn, It is a wonderful movie and the music brings back wonderful memories.
LOL, Ryan, too funny :)
A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down...
I loved this movie. This would be an amazing nanny to have. I always liked Dick Van Dikes character. The chimney sweep.
Great pick this week!
